PUBLIC LIBRARIES DEFY STEREOTYPES
By Tamar Kreke, Clermont County Public Library

The function of a public library hasn’t changed much over the years; it’s those who use the library that have changed.  Libraries have consistently fulfilled the informational and recreational needs of patrons.  Fifty years ago, those needs were met with books, books, and more books!  Times have changed and now people demand more. Librarians are pleased to provide today’s patrons with computers, videos, DVD’s, music CD’s, color printers, copiers, and unique programs.  These modern additions might change the way you view public libraries!

In the last ten years, Clermont County Public Library has changed the collection and the way it’s managed based on patron requests.  In 1996, the card catalog was computerized which allows patrons to see the books available at all 10 branches (instead of only their local branch). Since 2000, CCPL has added music CD’s and movies on VHS and DVD to the audio-visual collection.  Our movies are FREE, no more trips to the video store!  CCPL also increased the number of audio books on tape and CD.  Users often checkout audio books to listen to during their daily commute.  Also, with the help of a Gates Grant, CCPL added new computers to each branch. Patrons can search the Internet, type homework assignments, create resumes, and more. Technological advances in libraries are “out of this world!”

Speaking of outer space, do you need space? All CCPL branches have meeting rooms available for public use. The Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, and tutors are among local groups that regularly use the meeting rooms.  Maybe you are just looking for something to do.  Library staff members offer programs on everything from storytimes to family fun nights to teen crafts!  Have you ever wanted to try journaling or scrapbooking? Would you like to hear live music for FREE?  The library is the hot place to go!

With all of this other stuff, one may ask, where are the books?  Rest assured, they are everywhere.  The library has the latest best sellers, fiction for kids and teens, non-fiction, craft books, cookbooks, pet books, and car repair books.  Whatever your interest, the library is bound to have something for you!

So, what’s stopping you from visiting the library?  Worried about the librarians? CCPL staff members are nothing like the image portrayed by the media; once in a while, they may wear their hair in a bun, but it’s not part of the dress code!  They aren’t typically “shushing” you constantly, and they are NOT, as many people assume, stamping due dates and reading books all day. Today’s librarians are approachable; they want to meet you and help with your informational needs. If you are ever at the Williamsburg Branch stop by and say “hello.”  My name is Tamar and if you have questions, I’ll have answers!

Despite the modernization of public libraries, the “heart” of the library remains unchanged. The Clermont County Public Library is a positive fixture in your community; the place for all your leisure and informational needs!
