Thank you for your recent email stating your opposition to Governor Strickland's proposal to cut funding for public libraries. I value your thoughts and appreciate you taking the time to inform me of your stance on this very important issue. There are still a great number of details to work out during this budgeting process, and hearing your concerns helps me make the best decision for my district.

Like you, I was shocked and dismayed to hear that the Governor was proposing to cut $227 million to libraries out of the budget. I believe that the libraries play a vital role in keeping the public informed and educated. Summer reading programs and access to books promote continued education for our youth. Computer and internet access may help the unemployed search for jobs and market themselves. Additionally, libraries are sources for free and inexpensive entertainment for families and individuals on tight budgets.

While I greatly value and appreciate the role that our public libraries play, I would like to encourage you to contact Governor Strickland's office directly to convey this message to him. His office can be reached by dialing (614) 466-3555. It is important that Governor Strickland hears directly from the people he will be impacting by these devastating cuts.

Currently the budget is being discussed by the six-member conference committee. While I do not sit on this committee, I will continue to monitor any developments on this issue. I will be taking your thoughts and those of all my other constituents regarding this budget into consideration when the final bill is brought before me for concurrence.

Again, thank you for making me aware of your concerns. I value your thoughts. Please do not hesitate to contact my office in the future if there is anything I can do for you or your family.

Sincerely,
