WiFi Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Hot Spot?

A "hot spot" is an area that offers wireless (WiFi) access to the Internet. This technology allows computers and PDAs to send and receive Internet data via a wireless network.

All CCPL branches except for Felicity are part of the Cincinnati Bell Hot Spot Partner Program. CCPL is providing WiFi access to the Felicity Branch customers.

Is there an access fee?

There is no access fee for customers at the Felicity Branch or for subscribers to Cincinnati Bell Zoomtown or Fuse at our other nine locations.

Pricing information for Cincinnati Bell Hot Spots for non-subscribers of Zoomtown or Fuse is detailed on the Cincinnati Bell's login page or at Cincinnati Bell WiFi HotSpots.

Since I'm using my own equipment, does the Library's Internet Use policy still apply to me?

Yes, wireless users agree to abide by the Library's Internet Use policy.

How do I use a Hot Spot?

You will need to bring your own laptop computer to the library and it will need to have built-in WiFi or you will need to install a WiFi network card. The library does not provide wireless cards.

Most WiFi equipment will be compatible. However, the library can make no guarantees as to compatibility of your equipment with the library's network.

Guidelines for configuring your wireless hardware and accessing the Internet are available at:

Will I be able to access the Library's card catalog?

Yes. The card catalog is fully accessible from either the library's home page or by going directly to the library catalog

When I access your remote databases, will I have to provide a library card?

No. For purposes of accessing our databases, you will be treated as if you are on a Customer workstation, and will not have to provide a library card.

Will I be able to print from the public printer?

Printers are not available via the wireless connection. If you need to print, please use one of our public workstations.

Hours of Operation

Wireless access is available during the hours that the library is open.

Is the wireless network secure?

WiFi in the library is as secure as any open public access network. Make sure you are on an SSL-encrypted web page prior to sending or receiving confidential information.

I use a Macintosh instead of a Windows-based pc. Can I still use the Hot Spots?

Yes. You will need an Airport card or other 802.11b compatible wireless card and the appropriate software installed.

Can the library help me configure my computer?

  • Every person's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. Library staff is not permitted to handle your laptop or peripheral equipment.
  • The library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.
  • If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software. For help with a Cincinnati Bell Hot Spot contact their Help Desk at 513-397-HELP (4357) for more assistance.

What about virus protection and security?

It is solely the responsibility of the wireless device owner/user to provide anti-virus protection, and to configure their laptop / PDA settings to provide the appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices within the library and the Internet itself. The library cannot and will not take responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings; or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection. Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.

Electrical Power

  • Customers are free to plug their laptops and other wireless enabled equipment into any available electrical outlet EXCEPT those that are part of a surge protector.
  • Customers are strongly encouraged to provide their own surge protection.
  • The library will not be held liable for damage to equipment caused by power outages or fluctuations.
  • Customers are not permitted to plug their equipment into any library owned surge protector.
