Digging into ChiltonLibrary

Each day this week, we will take a closer look at each of CCPL’s new databases starting with ChiltonLibrary, which provides decades of information to maintain cars and light trucks.

To refresh your memory, you can access any of our databases from our Research and Homework page of CCPL’s website or by searching the catalog.

The name Chilton is synonymous with vehicle repair manuals and ChiltonLibrary offers that same information including maintenance schedules, bulletins and recall notices in an easy to use database. The repair portion of ChiltonLibrary contains diagrams, charts, photographs and closed caption videos providing a variety of ways to distribute the information.

When it comes to maintaining a vehicle, many car owners know it is important, and keeping track of it is easy if you refer to a maintenance schedule. But what if you have misplaced the owner’s manual or bought a used vehicle without one? Use ChiltonLibrary to look up your vehicle’s scheduled maintenance intervals, which are displayed in a grid so you can print it and keep it with your car. This feature makes vehicle maintenance a little more hassle free.

Vehicle safety is important to all of us and while there are several sources for recalls, ChiltonLibrary provides the convenience of recalls and bulletins for each vehicle in one spot. Now, this is one area where you hope there is not too much information, but ChiltonLibrary allows you to select a vehicle make and model and review the information.

ChiltonLibrary has a help link at the top of the page or you can visit the information desk at the library or call your local branch to learn more.

Databases Changes

Beginning July 1, CCPL will replace a few databases with similar offerings and add new databases for genealogy, online classes and legal forms.

Mango Languages will replace Byki Language Learning
User statistics show the top five languages accessed through Byki were Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, and Japanese, which are also available through Mango Languages. Also, patrons will be able to access 15 English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), packages to help foreign language speakers learn English.

Additionally, Mango offers webinars on their website and an app for the iPhone.

The languages available through Mango Languages are Arabic (Levantine), Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (Mandarin), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Farsi, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Pashto, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Slovak, Spanish (Latin American), Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

For years, Chilton manuals have offered everyone from do-it-yourselfers to professional mechanics trusted auto repair information. That information is also available in Chilton Library, a database that will replace Auto Repair Reference Center. Patrons will be able to access the user-friendly Chilton Library from home to view and print PDF diagrams, maintenance schedules, recall information and more.

New Databases

Genealogy is CCPL’s most popular area of databases and we are happy to announce the addition of World Vital Records to our collection. World Vital Records allows patrons to search and view newspapers in their original image format, digitized yearbooks and gravestones photos.

Universal Class is the database for patrons looking to take non-credit, personal enrichment classes in the areas of business, grant writing, computer instruction and more. This database offers over 500 free online continuing education classes led by real instructors. Patrons may enroll in up to five courses and have six months to complete each course. The courses are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so patrons can attend classes and complete assignments on their own schedule while communicating with the instructor via email.

Law Depot database helps patrons locate the appropriate printable and write-in legal form by either accessing the alphabetized list of forms or answering a set of questions. Additional features include videos and free online legal question chat service staffed by attorneys.

Patrons can use all of our databases from within any branch at the Clermont County Public Library or at home. With your library card number ready, click Research and Homework on the top menu of our website and select Databases from the list. Filter choices by subject, search alphabetically, or enter a search term.

“Gesundheit!”

I seem to be hearing a lot of that word these days! I can tolerate the impending rain, as it promises that things will be very green and flower-y soon, but the allergies & constant sneezing are quite another beast. I’ve been on the hunt for some homeopathic remedies that might alleviate my allergy symptoms, and I wanted to make sure that my information was coming from a trusted source and not just a random Google search.

I turned to our many databases on Health and Medicine to begin my allergy-free quest. Some excellent resources in that category are Alt HealthWatch, MedlinePlus, NetWellness, and PubMed. These databases allow you to browse medical, health-related and drug reference books. You can read articles on health and fitness and find sources on alternative health information. It includes full text journals, magazines, and reference books dealing with physical health, mental health, wellness, fitness, and nutrition. Coverage includes a focus on the complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health and wellness.

These examples are some of the many invaluable databases available on clermontlibrary.org. To access all available databases visit Research & Homework and click on databases. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to try stinging nettle, turmeric, & garlic for these allergies…

Who Do You Think You Are?

You don’t have to be a celebrity on a hit NBC genealogy reality show in order to scout your family tree. True, it takes some time, effort, patience and resources, but you have the resources available to you at the library.

The library subscribes to Ancestry, the same genealogy database used by the researchers on the NBC television show, Who Do You Think You Are? Ancestry can only be accessed by visiting Clermont County Public Library and signing into the database with your library card.

Heritage Quest, another reputable genealogy resource can also be utilized at the Clermont County Public Library or from home with your library card.

Visit our comprehensive genealogy webpage for website suggestions and database information. Be sure to explore our catalog and explore all the books and materials available at your library.

For more information, call the library or stop by your local branch and ask for assistance at the information desk.
