“I joined the 2nd platoon of Charlie Company with 46 men in March of 1967 and ended up with only four men left in December of 1967.”
Sadly, these sobering words are not found in an embellished work of fiction, dramatized for affect. Instead, they can be found in “395 Days” a detailed book written by local author and Vietnam veteran Gary Kasten.
Kasten spent 395 days in the Vietnam jungle, arriving there in 1967. Almost immediately upon returning home from his tour of duty, he began writing down all of his experiences hoping to alleviate the stress and burden that the memories carried. He vividly describes those 395 days – from the food and sights to the unmitigated fear he and the other men faced.
Kasten joins the Milford-Miami Twp. Branch Library on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 10:30 am to discuss and read excerpts from his book. He has witnessed things many of us have only ever read or seen in movies — don’t miss this opportunity to experience living history.
Space for Mr. Kasten’s presentation is limited so stop by the branch or call (513) 248-0700 to reserve your spot.
Our New Richmond Branch writing group is challenging themselves with a monthly writing prompt. This month’s prompt is sensory writing inspired by a memory evoked from a scent. Share your efforts here on the blog or attend their next meeting.
Investigate our new Creative Writing Resources page and let us know if you have any suggestions.
Due to the overwhelming response to our writing contest, we’re giving our judges some extra time. We want to be sure they have time to carefully read and consider all of the submissions. So we’ll be announcing the winner for both the adult and teen contests on June 11.
Thanks for your patience!

Just a quick reminder that income tax returns need to be filed by April 18 this year – thanks to a federal holiday in Washington, D.C. on Friday, April 15. Not certain you can meet the filing deadline? File Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Visit your local library branch for tax forms or assistance finding forms on the IRS website.
This is your chance to share your story – a memoir, or the story of a family member. Write a non-fiction essay describing a personal experience. You’ve got 1,500 words or less, so make them count!
Stories may be submitted in a branch or here by April 30.
The first prize is a Kobo ereader. Runners up will receive bag of CCPL goodies and a journal.
Your stories become the property of the Clermont County Public Library and will not be returned after the judging.
