Irish authors, both classic and contemporary, born in Ireland or of Irish ancestry, fill library shelves with compelling literature. Embrace a bit of the Irish with one of these well-known titles, or link to a list of titles by the author that are held at the library. Connect to the Biography Reference Bank to find for more author information.
Black History Month, Presidents Day and various other school assignments have created the perfect storm of requests for biographies among the school-age set in Milford. What’s a parent to do?
There are several ways to search for biographies in the library catalog. If you have a specific person in mind, you can do a subject search using the person’s last name and then the first name. We had a young man interested in Wyatt Earp and pulled up a list of possible categories with Earp as the subject. Since this young man was a middle schooler, we chose the “juvenile literature” link and discovered two Earp biographies in the CCPL system. Remember, if your home branch does not own a title, we would be happy to request the item from another branch!
Patrons often ask what the “JB” or “B” designates when they see these notations come up in the catalog. “B” stands for biography and a “JB” is a juvenile biography. If you are looking for a biography appropriate for a school-age child, seek out the juvenile biographies. They will generally have fewer pages and more photographs and illustrations than an adult biography.
Can’t find what you need in our print collection? Don’t despair! We have an excellent database for biographical research as well. Biography Reference Bank is a collection of biographical material from a variety of sources including, biographical profiles, feature articles, interviews, essays, book reviews, performance reviews, speeches, and obituaries. It covers over 500,000 people and includes over 36,000 images! We may not have a book on a current figure like Lady Gaga, but you can find out basic biographical information about her, as well as articles and reviews on her music and photographs of her controversial costumes.
Visit the information desk at your local branch and ask where the biography section is located. Browse this section and you will meet the most interesting people!
