Doctor Who?

who If you’re like me sometimes it takes awhile for popular trends to surface on your radar. You may have heard talk about an awesome show called Doctor Who.

Doctor Who? What kind of name is that?

It is a great name. The best name.

Doctor Who has been around in England for a while, but it is finally crossing the big pond to America. The result is something like the Beatles phenomenon. Okay, so maybe not that big, but it is big. Huge. And you should definitely watch it. If you’ve seen it then you know what I’m talking about.

Like that one episode where you find out someone is really related to someone else.

Or that one with the moon landing.

Or that time someone got stuck in an alien hotel with your deepest fears inside the rooms.

Or those creepy statue things that you have to look at.

The mix of sci-fi, adventure, and humor is purely addictive and before you know it you are going to want a bow tie and a fez of your own. If you’re new to Doctor Who I’d suggest starting with the fifth series where The Doctor is played by Matt Smith. After you burn through the fifth, sixth and now seventh series (Because you will, in a matter of days. If you don’t you’re a Dalek.) then you can re-visit some of the past Doctors including David Tennet and Christopher Eccleston. Enjoy and may you never again have to ask, Doctor Who?

New Dystopian Anthology

shardsIf you’re looking for some well written dystopian stories, reserve a copy of Shards to Ashes with stories by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong among others.

From the publisher: The world is gone, destroyed by human, ecological, or supernatural causes. Survivors dodge chemical warfare and cruel gods; they travel the reaches of space and inhabit underground caverns. Their enemies are disease, corrupt corporations, and one another; their resources are few, and their courage is tested.

Powerful original dystopian tales from nine bestselling authors offer bleak insight, prophetic visions, and precious glimmers of light among the shards and ashes of a ruined world.

Homeland by Cory Doctorow

homelandIf you like the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, you might enjoy Cory Doctorow’s latest book, Homeland. Beautiful Creatures

creaturesThe movie debuts on Feb. 14 (how perfect). If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for?? If you’re a fan of paranormal romances/urban fantasy, I think you’ll enjoy Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia. In a small South Carolina town, where it seems little has changed since the Civil War, sixteen-year-old Ethan is powerfully drawn to Lena, a new classmate with whom he shares a psychic connection and whose family hides a dark secret that may be revealed on her sixteenth birthday.

The story’s also been adapted as manga. And there’s the soundtrack from the movie available now.
