Grave Mercy by Robin Lefever

grave mercyI just finished Grave Mercy by Robin Lefevers and it was fantastic! Ismae is a young girl being forced into an arranged marriage with an abusive man when she’s rescued and whisked away to a convent. But it’s not your ordinary sort of convent because Ismae has been marked as a handmaiden of St. Mortain, the saint of death.

Ismae is trained as an assassin and then sent on assignment to her duchess’s court. Of course, there’s intrigue and romance to follow: gorgeous gowns and balls, poisons and betrayals, secret passageways and unforeseen alliances.

I really enjoyed this alternate history of medieval Europe; I’m looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Sneak Peek of Raven Boys

raven boysMaggie Stiefvater’s new book Raven Boys is the first book in a new series. It’s due out in the fall but you can take a sneak peek at the first two chapters.

Publisher’s description of the book -

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Fever (The Chemical Garden #2) by Lauren DeStefano

feverDo  you enjoy Veronica Roth’s Divergent series? You might like The Chemical Garden series by Lauren DeStefano also. Fever, the second book, recently arrived.

The series began with Wither. By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape.

Fever has Rhine, the heroine of Wither, running away with Gabriel on of the servants from her father-in-law’s house. They run right into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her fortune turns again. With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago – surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness.

The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous – and in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at twenty-five, time is precious. Worse still, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion…by any means necessary.
