Soundtrack for stay-at-home projects

Kraftwerk – 3D The Catalogue: This is crucial listening.  If you don’t know, then you’d better find out. By the godfathers of electronic music, an essential listen to understand the past of electronic dance music.

James Blake – Overgrown: This is one of the few records I own that can make me cry.  Electronic music with equal parts R&B and Soul. Blake never makes the same album twice.  This is an album you eventually buy on vinyl, just to hear it pop and crackle.

Chelsea Wolfe – Abyss: Abyss is night music. As Wolfe put it, “Abyss is meant to have the feeling of when you’re dreaming, and you briefly wake up, but then fall back asleep into the same dream, diving quickly into your own subconscious.”  That may be so, but this album packs a heavy punch.  This is not for the faint of heart.  I’ve seen Chelsea Wolfe live almost ten times and I’ll see her again as many times as possible.

Tame Impala – The Slow Rush: The Slow Rush is Tame Impala’s second album. Parker still sings like a Bee Gee with the soul of Bowie’s Major Tom, floating above his thick disco, funk, and trip-hop beats, beautifully manicured synth textures and soulful melodies. This is one best suited for a night drive while smiling with the windows down.

Download

Massive Attack – Mezzanine: The group’s departure from the trip hop sound they practically coined, but was it?  This album is a major departure from the jazzy and laidback sound of the first two albums from the group, but it is the best in my opinion.  This album focuses on the dark undercurrents which had always been present in the collective’s music. This is the soundtrack to the apocalypse: beautiful and melancholic.

Download

Thievery Corporation – Treasures from the Temple: From the purveyors of downtempo music, this album is even better than the record it spawns from.  This album contains b-sides and rarities from the groups previous endeavor entitled Temple of I & I.  Expect notes of dancehall, dub, and reggae.  This is a soothing journey to relaxation. The soundtrack to your intimate dinner party of one.

Download

Olafur Arnalds – Re:member: From the groundbreaking Icelandic composer, musician and producer. This album combines elements of ambient, classical, electronic, and even elements of pop and rock. This is one to enjoy a cup of coffee to.

Download

The Who – Quadrophenia: The Who’s second rock opera which became the voice of an entire generation. This masterpiece tells the story of a Mod named Jimmy and all of his misadventures.  This is considered the history book for the Mod vs. Rocker craze that swept London in 1960s.  All of Jimmy’s different personalities match a certain member of The Who.  Guess who?

Download

The Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill: This is what started it all from the Brooklyn Trio who fought for their right to party.  This was the first rap LP to top the Billboard album chart.  To date it has achieved diamond status, selling over 10 million copies.  Crank it up and give the neighbors something to wonder about.
