In our daily lives, we move between two primary places: our homes (the first space) and our workplaces or schools (the second space). But there's a third space that's essential to building strong, connected communities—and your public library sits right at its heart.

What Is a Third Space?

A third space is a public place where people gather outside of home and work. It's neutral ground where you're free to come and go, where you don't need a membership to belong, and where you can encounter neighbors you might never meet otherwise. Coffee shops, parks, and community centers can serve this function—but few do it as comprehensively as public libraries.

Why Third Spaces Matter

Despite being more digitally connected than ever with social media, texting, and chat, many people report feeling isolated and disconnected. The growing use of AI is intensifying this feeling. People are hungrier than ever for meaningful, authentic connection. We drive from our homes to our workplaces and back again, rarely interacting with the broader fabric of our community. Third spaces interrupt this pattern. They're where community actually happens.

Why the Library Is a Great Third Space

The Clermont County Public Library embodies everything a third space should be:

We're truly open to everyone. You don't need to make a purchase, have a membership, or meet any requirement beyond basic courtesy. Whether you're a student, a senior, a parent with young children, or someone seeking a place to spend an afternoon, you're welcome here.

We're judgment-free zones. You can browse for five minutes or stay for five hours. You can use our computers, attend our programs, or find a comfortable chair and read.

We strengthen community bonds. Through storytimes, book clubs, arts and craft classes, senior cafes, game nights, technology classes, and community events, we create opportunities for people to connect over shared interests and experiences.

We're spaces for discovery and growth. Whether someone is learning a new skill, exploring a new hobby, seeking job search resources, or simply finding their next great read, we support personal development in ways that strengthen our entire community.

A Space for What Comes Next

The Clermont County Public Library isn't just buildings stocked with books—though we're certainly that. We're a place where everyone belongs - a space where Clermont County comes together.

We're here for you. When you need a notary, a book suggestion, a place to study or have a meeting, or a class to learning something new, we’re here! We’re your third space.
